If it meant going “over there” for a couple of years to see off an enemy to our lifestyle, well, it was worth it. No one, of course, ever thinks that they won’t come back!

Fast forward to the 21 st Century...

How do you think we would go if a very real, serious threat to this country materialised? Do you think that the youth of this country would rise to the occasion? Perhaps they might surprise us.

There is no serious threat, so we will never know.

We can, however, make an investment in the remembrance of our glorious Anzac heritage. We can salute our fallen heroes by dedicating a child (or two) to them.

Many of us know of a distant relative who died in WWI or even WWII. Why not think of having a child in that person’s name? Sure the names are pretty old fashioned & awful, but it can always be a middle name. If enough people do this, why the name may become fashionable again!

If you don’t have a relative who served or died we have a list of names that were popular at the time of WWI & WWII. We have included women’s names as many women worked in “essential” industries like munitions factories (which were very dangerous) and also as clerks, nurses, etc – especially in WWII.

About the list of names

Hot names of people who want to name their babies after heroes of past wars.

Remember! You don’t have to use any of these names. You can name your child after the latest heartthrob in “Days of our Lives” if you like. Consider this, though.

You can give the child a middle name, which is not necessarily fashionable and get away with it. Lets face it, the middle name only really is mentioned at a Christening, in front of a magistrate if your child has been naughty, at a graduation ceremony, or marriage. Not too much to bear! Use your creativity.

Lets not forget that it is a wonderful gesture to give the child a name of a family member who served, be it the first or second world wars, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, other Australian peacekeeping or the Gulf War.
